Anyone who’s worked with me knows how much importance I place on seasonal eating. Once we’ve used dietary approaches to correct any imbalances, I’m keen to move clients to seasonal eating.

Why?

Not only does food taste better when it’s in season, but the the food that grows around us in the different seasons of the years is what we need at that time. Nature provides us with exactly what we need.

In summer we see an abundance of salad and cucumbers with their cooling, juicy qualities, ideal for calming the heat of the summer and hydrating us. As autumn comes along, root vegetables start to appear ready for those grounding soups and stews we need as the weather turns colder.

In October, we’re seeing lots of brightly coloured squashes, the wild mushrooms are at their absolute best and apples, pears and plums are hanging from the trees.

Anyone who’s worked with me knows how much importance I place on seasonal eating. Once we’ve used dietary approaches to correct any imbalances, I’m keen to move clients to seasonal eating.

Why?

Not only does food taste better when it’s in season, but the food that grows around us in the different seasons of the year is what we need at that time. Nature provides us with exactly what we need.

In summer we see an abundance of salad and cucumbers with their cooling, juicy qualities ideal for calming the heat of summer and hydrating us. As autumn comes along, the squashes and root vegetables start to appear ready for those grounding soups and stews we need as the weather turns colder.

In September we’re seeing the last of the salads and some leafy greens in the form of chard and pak choi – all ideal for removing the build-up of summer heat. At the same time, the earthy mushrooms are popping up ready to boost our immunity for the season ahead and the summer squashes are a nod at things to come.

Modern healthcare has conditioned us to think that taking a tablet is all that is needed to cure illness. When clients arrive at my clinic, they are mainly interested in what herbs I can give them to alleviate their symptoms.

True health and well-being in Ayurveda is so much more than this. If the body isn’t digesting food properly, is stressed and in a constant ‘fight or flight response’, taking handfuls of the best quality herbs you can get won’t achieve anything on it’s own. It’s the subtle - often small changes - to lifestyle and routine which can make the most profound difference. Remember, in Ayurveda we are treating not just the symptoms but the root cause of any dis-ease. In a more favourable physical, mental and spiritual environment, herbs can then start to work their magic.

On Sunday I started a 15-day Sun Salutation ‘Challenge’ with @deepaapte. As a group, we are working towards completing 12 sets of Sun Salutations daily at the end of the 15 days.

This is a small change for me which I intend to become a part of my daily routine. I have a tendency towards Kapha accumulation and, at the end of this Kapha season, it has manifested in stiff joints, lethargy and a feeling of heaviness.

Regular, early morning movement is key to resolving this and is just as important - if not more so - than any herbal medicines I can take.

We took the Christmas tree down yesterday but I’m not quite ready for new beginnings so we’ve kept our winter display above the fireplace. We’re in the depths of winter and the days are still dark and short. Nature is slumbering and to a degree we should be doing the same. It’s not the time for pushing forward - that time will come when we see the green shoots coming through the soil and the leaves appearing on the trees. For now rest, plan and gather energy ready for the year ahead.

Wherever there is life, there’s Ayurveda.

I often get asked about Ayurveda. Some people know the literal definition - the science of life - and others speak of an ancient health system, doshas or of its origins in India.

None of that is wrong. But in its essence, Ayurveda is everything around us. It’s the unconscious processes that allow our bodies to function, it’s the life force that causes the seed to push through the soil and grow, it’s the energy that connects us one with another and with all living things.

In my practice, I help people understand Ayurveda - the science of life - and use this knowledge to live healthy, fulfilling lives physically, mentally and spiritually. Not all of my approaches are traditionally Ayurvedic. I work in a western culture and often it is more appropriate and acceptable to my clients to use herbs, nutrition and lifestyle approaches that resonate with our physical and social environment. This is not to diminish the origin of Ayurveda but rather to embrace the concept and to apply the science to the world around us.

Wherever there is life, there’s Ayurveda. I often get asked about Ayurveda. Some people know...

“Early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.”

One of the things I love about Ayurveda is how much of it we find in what has been passed down to us from our parents, grandparents, great grandparents and even further back.

This quaint, old proverb reflects what Ayurveda knows to be true and what modern science describes as Circadian Rhythms - the concept that our bodies are naturally attuned to doing certain things at specific times of the day.

I generally recommend my clients wake at sunrise, give or take half an hour depending on their individual constitution. Ayurvedically, the hours between 2am and 6am represent Vata time - the hours in which properties associated with Vata energy are more dominant in our bodies and in the atmosphere. Vata energy creates movement and activity - just what we need to get us out of bed and moving in the morning. Prana - the essence of life - is highest in the atmosphere around dawn and waking that time allows us to benefit from that very special energy.

As we move beyond 6am, we enter Kapha time which lasts until 10am. Kapha is associated with slow, heavy qualities and we often find that sleeping in to 8/9am - or later - can leave us feeling sluggish for the rest of the day. We have lost the vitality associated with the Vata time and struggle to find the energy to carry us through. We may experience tiredness for no obvious reason.

When it comes to sleep, I recommend a 10/10.30pm bedtime. Between the hours of 6pm and 10pm, the body releases hormones which slow down processes and make it easier to sleep. It’s one of the reasons why an early dinner is more beneficial for maintaining a healthy weight - from 6pm onwards, the digestive system is one of the processes that slows ready for sleep.

Shatavari. A herb perhaps best known for treating a wide range of gynaecological issues but there’s much more to this herb - both for women and men. It’s a herb that I frequently suggest to clients and here are a few of the reasons why.

Shatavari is the root of the Asparagus Racemosos plant and is an incredibly cooling herb. As such it can be taken for any form of inflammation, particularly in the Gastrointestinal Tract. If you suffer from acid reflux, heartburn or gastritis you may find relief from taking Shatavari regularly together with a diet based around bitter foods (think leafy greens!).

Shatavari is also a great nervine and is indicated for stress, anxiety and burnout conditions typically caused by an excess of dry heat in the body.
⠀⠀
To return to the gynaecological benefits, many women find that Shatavari helps with pre-menstrual issues, hot flushes, peri and full menopause.

Shirodhara is a very powerful Ayurvedic treatment which involves pouring warm, herbal oils on the forehead around the so-called “Third Eye” marma point. This point is where the hypothalamus, pituitary gland and pineal glands are situated and the vibrations caused by the oil flow on the area can help to balance the endocrine, immune and nervous systems.

Shirodhara is suggested for clients who are seeking to reduce stress and anxiety, improve sleep and awaken intuition. It is sometimes known as “Ayurvedic Hypnotherapy”.

Although it appears fairly simple the effects can be profound and it is contraindicated where there is Ama (toxicity) in the body. The people coming for Shirodhara today have being following a cleanse programme as part of their overall Ayurvedic treatment plan. However, it is possible to have this treatment as a standalone treat - there are just a few simple steps that need to be taken for three or four days beforehand to make sure you receive optimum benefit from the treatment.

My hot weather heroes! As the temperatures rise, your body will thank you for helping it to keep Pitta in check. Aloe Vera, neem, cucumber and coriander all have a cooling effect on the body. Try blitzing cucumber with coriander and some Aloe Vera juice or coconut water for a refreshing smoothie. Or, for a warm drink which has cooling properties, try @ayurvedapura Saffron and Cardamon tea. This rather splendid Aloe Vera plant caught my eye while I was having my morning coffee at @manukawholefoods earlier today.

Greeva Basti practice yesterday afternoon. This treatment is great for back, neck and shoulder pain and also asthma and breathing difficulties. I used @ayurvedapura Chandana Balalakshadi oil for this treatment as this person was also suffering from a cold and congestion. (Scroll to second photo to see the Basti in place). A Basti is a “well” made out of dough which is placed on the body, filled with hot oil and the area within the well is massaged to treat the Marma Points in that area of the body. This Greeva Basti was on the upper back/shoulder area but Bastis can also be applied to the lower back, tummy, heart region, knee or elbow to relieve conditions in those areas.
